Staying Motivated During the Holidays

Staying Motivated During the Holidays: Your Guide to Finishing the Year Strong

The holiday season is full of joy, traditions and time with loved ones, but it’s also packed with travel, big meals and busy schedules that make it easy to slip out of a workout routine. The good news? With a little planning and the right mindset, you can stay active, feel your best and head into the new year with momentum.

Here are some practical, pressure-free tips to help you stay motivated through the holidays:

1. Set Realistic Goals for the Season

Your schedule might look different this time of year so let your goals look different, too. Instead of focusing on personal records or long workouts, set achievable goals like moving for 20 minutes a day, getting outside for a walk 3–4 times a week or completing a short strength routine at home.

2. Plan Your Workouts Like Any Other Holiday Activity

Treat your workouts like an appointment. Look ahead at your week and intentionally block off time to move. Even if your plans change (which they often do this time of year!), having that time set aside helps keep you on track.

3. Make Workouts Social

Use the season to your advantage—invite friends or family to join you for a walk, a local run club or do a holiday lights run!

4. Stick to a “Move Daily” Mindset

Your workout doesn't have to be a formal gym session. Take the stairs. Walk while you catch up with a loved one. Stretch after wrapping gifts. Keep moving—it all adds up!

5. Give Yourself Grace

The holidays are a special time, and routines will shift. If you miss a workout, don’t stress. Just pick it back up the next day. Consistency over perfection is what keeps you motivated long-term.

6. Sign Up for a post-holiday race

Having something on the calendar—like the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, to give you built-in motivation to keep moving during the holiday season.

Keep the Momentum Going

This season is meant to be enjoyed and staying active can help you feel your best while making the most of it. Keep moving, stay flexible and celebrate every small win. You’ll head into the new year feeling strong, balanced and proud of your progress.
