Jet's Pizza Pace Team Tips

Get race-day ready with expert advice from the world-famous Pace Team! The Jet’s Pizza Pace Team powered by MIT & Fleet Feet Columbus shares practical training tips to help you stay on track, build confidence and hit your goals on the streets of Columbus at Cap City. Whether you’re chasing a PR or just looking to enjoy the journey, these tips will help you train smarter and race stronger.

  • Treat the race as a celebration of your training. Soak in the crowds, thank the volunteers, and enjoy the atmosphere. You’ve already done the hard part!
  • Don't make the common mistake of 'start line adrenaline!' Let pacers do the work of tracking the miles and time so you can focus on the crowds, your music, and a strong finish celebrating your achievement.

  • Lean into your rest days. Your body needs time to recovery from all of the miles you are running in training.

  • Get fitted for shoes at a local running store! You will be putting a lot of miles on your feet this winter and spring and you want to make sure you are wearing a proper pair for your foot and gait. You wouldn’t drive a car across the country with the wrong type of wheels on it and the same goes for your shoes.
  • Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, even when it’s cold out! You may not feel as thirsty when you go outside for a workout in February as you do in August, but you still need to be replacing the fluids you are losing through sweat and your breath. If you start feeling thirsty in the middle of the workout you are already becoming dehydrated, and it’s especially something to keep in mind as the calendar changes to spring and it starts warming back up.
  • Join a local running group or club! Running in a group will help the long run or walk miles fly by, they will help motivate you and keep you accountable to your training plan, and you can get training and race advice from more experienced members.

  • Expect the winter slump. Rough patches in training are normal, especially during cold, dark weeks. Don’t panic — it happens to everyone.
  • Reconnect with your “why.” When motivation dips, remind yourself why you signed up and how finishing on race day will feel.
  • Trust the plan. Training is hard by design. Stay consistent, listen to your body and remember that perfection isn’t required to succeed.
  • Lean on your people. Running with a friend or group builds accountability and makes tough miles more manageable.
  • Don’t forget to enjoy it. Training is about more than race day — have fun, appreciate the journey and take pride in what you’re accomplishing.
