Cap City Spotlight Bob Golden

For more than two decades, Bob Golden has been part of the Cap City Half Marathon story, and Cap City has been part of his story. Bob is part of a group of legacy participants to complete every Cap City event since the inaugural race, and he has all the medals to prove it!

Bob’s streak is fueled by consistency, community and a genuine love for the experience. We caught up with Bob to talk about what keeps him coming back, how the race has evolved and what he’d tell someone considering Cap City for the first time.

You’ve participated in every Cap City event. What keeps you coming back year after year?
It’s a combination of things that brings me back year over year. First M3S has created a fun and inclusive atmosphere that celebrates the community and participants. From a personal perspective, it's my annual physical fitness check-in. Maintaining my streak is a great motivator to stay active and train, I even schedule my annual physical the first week of May because I know I will be in my best shape

Take us back to your very first Cap City. What do you remember most?
I had recently taken running back up after several years and was looking for a challenge and came across an ad for the inaugural Cap City so I signed up. I hadn’t run more than a 5K since I crashed at the 1989 Columbus Marathon but The Penguin’s articles convinced me that I could do it and I was overcome with pride when I crossed the line.

How has Cap City changed over the years and what’s stayed the same?
Adding additional events has made Cap City more inclusive and something I can share with more friends. Overall, I know each year will be a manageable course and a good time!

Do you have a favorite Cap City memory?
There are so many moments that stand out over the past 22 years. One is the 2017 Cap
City. I had trained hard and was feeling good. On race day I stuck to my plan and I was
going under 2 hours for the first time in a couple years. Then Mother Nature intervened
and the lighting reflecting off the buildings Downtown was spectacular. The Race was
called and I recorded my fastest Cap City with a 1:28.

What would you say to someone considering Cap City for the first time?
Don’t be afraid to take the leap and sign up early so you are committed. Listen to your body and don’t overtrain. It’s the quality of miles not the quantity, I only run 3 days a week. Most importantly, find your tribe like mine at The Draft Room Run Club. Having a group of friends to train with is a great motivator.

Anything else you’d like to add?
Challenge yourself. It’s never too late to start your own streak.
