Matt Folk Wins 2012 Capital City Half Marathon

Matt Folk of Perrysburg, Ohio won his second major road race in three weeks yesterday when he took an early lead and was never seriously challenged in winning the Capital City Half Marathon Presented by KeyBank in 1:09:29.

Folk, 36, pulled away from a small pack about 1½ miles into the race. Levi Fox of Troy, Ohio finished second in 1:10:59.

Folk, who captured the Columbus Marathon in October, also won the Glass City Marathon in late April.

“This was the first time I did a real big race so close to a marathon, so I was a little unsure how my body would respond,” he said. “Luckily everything went really well.”

Folk averaged about 5:07 per mile over the first four miles before backing off.

“I slowed down a little because it warmed up and the humidity began to take its toll,” he said. “It has been really cool in Toledo recently and I haven't gotten accustomed to the warmer temperatures.”

Christina Murphy of Columbus was the first female finisher in 1:22:09.

The Capital City Half Marathon attracted 13,000 runners in three races: Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K. All races started at the corner of Broad Street and Civic Center Drive and ended at the Columbus Commons.

Paul Lang of Reynoldsburg won the Quarter Marathon in 40:11. Lacy Nagy of Gibsonburg, Ohio was the top female finisher in 47:56.

Matthew Jeromin of Roselle, IL, won the 5K in 18:58. Sarina Sudduth of Lewis Center was the first female finisher in 23:19.

Matt O'Brien, 36, of Mansfield, Ohio, who suffered cardiac arrest near the finish of the 2011 Capital City Half Marathon, was among the race's honorary starters before finishing the Half Marathon in 2:49.48.
