COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Capital City Half Marathon and Giant Eagle have created the Bicentennial Challenge that will reward athletes who compete in two of three designated endurance events in 2012 with a special commemorative Columbus Bicentennial medal.

“Our goal is simple: to encourage an active healthy lifestyle while celebrating the city's 200th birthday,” said David Babner, race director of the Capital City Half Marathon. “The Bicentennial Challenge medal will be a terrific reward to those who make the commitment to participating in at least two challenge events in 2012.”

In order to earn the commemorative medal, athletes must participate in the Capital City Half Marathon or the Tour de Cure cycling event AND then also participate in the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival (2k, 5k, 10k, Sprint Triathlon or Olympic Triathlon).

“Our commitment to health and wellness goes beyond our stores and into our communities through sponsorships and Team Member participation in events celebrating healthy living,” said Giant Eagle Regional Director of Operations Brian Ferrier. “Honoring those who show long-term dedication and success in multiple events, while celebrating the Columbus Bicentennial, seemed a natural fit.”

The Tour de Cure cycling event will be held on June 9, 2012 in Westerville. Visit for information and to register.

The Giant Eagle Multisport Festival will be held July 28-29, 2012 in downtown Columbus, with the featured triathlons beginning at Alum Creek State Park and finishing in downtown Columbus. Visit for information and to register.

The Bicentennial Edition of the Capital City Half Marathon Presented By KeyBank, which also features the Patrn Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K, was held on May 5, 2012 in downtown Columbus. A record field of 13,000 runners and walkers participated. Runners and walkers who participated in the Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon or 5K are eligible to participate.

The commemorative Bicentennial medals will be awarded at the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival at a special booth manned by M3S Sports, the company that produces the Capital City Half Marathon and co-produced the Giant Eagle Multisport Festival. Athletes who qualify for the medal will simply need to show their Giant Eagle Multisport Festival bib for confirmation.
