COLUMBUS, Ohio (December 17, 2015) — The 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and 2016 Men's & Women's USATF Half Marathon Championships will air live on WBNS 10TV when the National Championship Edition of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon is held in downtown Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods.
The two-hour broadcast will mark the first time a half marathon in Ohio has been broadcast live.
“10TV is proud to work with our partners to inspire Central Ohioans to live a longer and more vital life. We believe broadcasting the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon is a fundamental part of our responsibility to the community we serve,” said John Cardenas, President & GM WBNS 10TV.
The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and 2016 Men's & Women's USATF Half Marathon Championships will be held April 30, 2016 in downtown Columbus. Defending champions Diego Estrada and Kim Conley are expected to compete along with a record field of 15,000 runners and walkers in the Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K.
“We are proud to host the USATF Half Marathon Championships in Columbus in 2016 and 2017 and honored that WBNS 10TV has come on board to broadcast our sport's national championship live,” said David Babner, race director of The Capital City Half Marathon. “We look forward to crowning half marathon national champions in Columbus in 2016 and 2017 and will work with USA Track & Field to roll out the red carpet and create the best athlete experience possible.”
USA Track & Field awarded the 2016 and 2017 Men's & Women's USATF Half Marathon Championships to Columbus in February 2015 after a joint bid by M3S Sports, which produces the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.
“Columbus is thrilled to host USA Track & Field's Half Marathon Championships in an Olympic year in 2016, and 2017,” said Linda Shetina Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “Our city continues to grow because of collaborative partnerships and we're excited to join The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon in hosting such a high-profile event.”
The Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K will once again begin in downtown Columbus and finish at the Columbus Commons, home of the Giant Eagle Participant Recovery Zone, Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and Miller Lite Post-Race Party. The OhioHealth Health & Fitness Celebration & Packet Pick Up will be held at the Battelle Grand on April 28–29, 2016.
A record field of 15,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in OhioHealth Half Marathon (13.1 miles), Patrón Quarter Marathon (6.55 miles) and Commit To Be Fit 5K (3.1 miles) in 2015. All finishers will again be celebrated at the Finish Line Party with complementary Yellow Tail Sparling Wine, Miller Lite Beer, Papa John's Pizza, Patrón cocktails, Snowville Creamery Chocolate Milk, Panera Bread bagels and much, much more.
“The Capital City Half Marathon has always been a celebration of the healthy active lifestyle and we look forward to celebrating not only the nation's best long distance runners in 2016, but also the 15,000 runners and walkers who participate in our event,” Babner said. “Nobody in the country celebrates its participants like we do.”
The half marathon is the fastest growing standard distance race among U.S. road racers, according to Running USA, an industry trade group. More than 2 million people finished half marathons in 2014, compared to 303,000 in 1990. The Capital City Half Marathon has grown from 3,000 participants in its first year in 2004 to an expected 15,000 in 2016.
