Christo Landry, Tara Welling win 2016 USATF Half Marathon Championships titles at OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon

Christo Landry of Charlotte, N.C., wins 2016 USATF Half Marathon Championships

Christo Landry of Charlotte, N.C., and Tara Welling of Portland, Ore., captured USATF Half Marathon Championships on Saturday, April 30 at the 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon in downtown Columbus.

Landry, 30, pulled away from a large pack at the 10-mile mark and cruised over the final 5K to win his first half-marathon national championship in 1:02:52. Scott Fauble of Flagstaff, Ariz., was second in 1:03:06 and Scott Bauhs of San Luis Obispo, Calif., was third in 1:03:06.

Welling, 26, battled two-time Olympian Desi Linden for most of the day before breaking away at mile nine and took home her first half-marathon national title in 1:10:25. It was her second national championship of the year after winning the 15K national title in March.

Linden, a Michigan native who will compete in the marathon at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, was second in 1:11:06 and Colorado’s Brianna Nelson was third in 1:11:24.

“It was one of the best national championship courses that I’ve ran on,” Welling said. “The crowd here was awesome. There were always people around. It was uphill, downhill, it was a really great course. It’s been wonderful since I’ve been here.”

Said Bauhs, “Best experience I’ve had at a road race. It’s been incredible.”

Eric Hultquist of Somerville, Mass., won the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon in 1:11:53 and Catherine Campbell of North Canton, Ohio, was the top female finisher in 1:19:23.

Jordan Welling of Portland, Ore., won the Patrón Quarter Marathon in 34:37 and Melissa Tanner of Towson, Md., was the top female finisher in 39:01. Nicholas Lawyer of Columbus won the Commit To Be Fit 5K in 17:59 and Emily Sykes of Perrysburg, Ohio, was the top female finisher in 21:14.
