OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon To Host 2016 USATF Half Marathon Championships, Air Live On WBNS 10TV

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 27, 2016) — The 2016 USA Track & Field Half Marathon Championships will be held Saturday, April 30 in downtown Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods in conjunction with the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and be telecast live on WBNS 10TV.

Des Linden, a member of the 2016 U.S. Olympic marathon team; four-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman; defending Capital City Half Marathon champion Nick Arciniaga; ten-time national road racing champion Janet Bawcom; and 2015 runner-up Brianne Nelson are among the nation’s elite long-distance runners who will compete in the national championships.

The 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and 10TV Commit To Be Fit 5K will also be held on Saturday, April 30, and feature 14,000 runners and walkers on the “best tour of Columbus on two feet.” Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno will serve as the honorary race director.

The 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and 2016 USATF Half Marathon Championships will air LIVE on WBNS 10TV and streamed live on USATF.TV. The two-hour broadcast will mark the first time a half marathon has been broadcast live in Ohio.

“We are proud to bring the USATF Half Marathon Championships to Columbus in 2016 and 2017 and especially honored that WBNS 10TV will televise the event LIVE for the first time,” said David Babner, race director of The Capital City Half Marathon. “We look forward to crowning half marathon national champions in Columbus and celebrating the 14,000 runners and walkers who will participate in the Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K.”

The men’s and women’s winners of the USATF Half Marathon Championships will receive $12,100 each, a National Championship Ring courtesy of the Diamond Cellar and a TAG Heuer Winners Watch, also courtesy of the Diamond Cellar. The men’s and women’s rings are valued at $6,700 and $6,200 and the watches are valued at $1,600 and $1,500, respectively.

“This has never been done before anywhere in the country,” Babner said. “I can’t wait to present these National Championship Rings and TAG Heuer watches to the national champions on Saturday.”

Total prize and incentive money for the USATF Half Marathon Championships is more than $130,000.

The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon will celebrate all 14,000 runners and walkers at the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. in the Columbus Commons. The party will feature the Miller Lite Post-Race Concert featuring SWAGG and FBA.

All finishers will receive complimentary Yellow Tail Bubbles Sparkling Wine, the first Miller Lite “On The House,” specials on Patrón Margaritas, a free slice of Papa John’s Pizza, complimentary Snowville Chocolate Mile and more. The Diamond Cellar VIP Experience Tent is also in the Columbus Commons.

Papa John’s of Central Ohio has featured the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon on tens of thousands of pizza boxes in 25 restaurants as part of the company-wide effort to promote the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and benefit the OhioHealth Foundation.

Papa John’s will throw the “World’s Largest Pizza Party” at the finish line party by offering a free slice to all of the finishers in the Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and 10TV Commit To Be Fit 5K. Papa John’s donates an estimated 2,000 large pizzas for the giveaway.

Through Race Day, Papa John’s of Central Ohio is also offering an online special offer for two large one-topping pizzas and a 2-liter of soda for $22, with $2 of each purchase donated to the OhioHealth Foundation. On Race Day, Papa John’s will donate five percent of gross sales in its 25 restaurants to the OhioHealth Foundation, the benefiting charity of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon since 2015.

USA Track & Field awarded the 2016 and 2017 Men’s & Women’s USATF Half Marathon Championships to Columbus in February 2015 after a joint bid by M3S Sports, which produces the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.

“Columbus is thrilled to host USA Track & Field's Half Marathon Championships in an Olympic year in 2016, and 2017,” said Linda Shetina Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “Our city continues to grow because of collaborative partnerships and we're excited to join The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon in hosting such a high-profile event.”

The Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K will begin at the corner of Town and Front Streets and go through the Arena District, The Ohio State University campus, South Campus Gateway, Short North Arts District and German Village before finishing at High and Town streets. The Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and Post-Race Party are held in the Columbus Commons. The OhioHealth Health & Fitness Celebration & Packet Pick Up will at the Battelle Grand on April 28-29, 2016.

“The Capital City Half Marathon has always been a celebration of the healthy active lifestyle and we look forward to celebrating not only the nation’s best long distance runners in 2016, but also the 14,000 runners and walkers who participate in our event,” Babner said. “Nobody in the country celebrates its participants like we do.”

The half marathon is the fastest growing standard distance race among U.S. road racers, according to Running USA, an industry trade group. More than 2 million people finished half marathons in 2014, compared to 303,000 in 1990. The Capital City Half Marathon has grown from 3,000 participants in its first year in 2004 to an expected 15,000 in 2016.

DailyBurn.com, a popular Web site that provides workout and nutrition information to 2.5 million members, recently named the Capital City Half Marathon the “Best Half Marathon In Ohio.”
