Black Girls RUN! At Cap City Half Marathon in 2012

National Group Names Columbus Event as Destination Race

Black Girls RUN!

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Black Girls RUN!, a national running group with more than 7,000 members, has named the Capital City Half Marathon Presented by KeyBank as one of its national “meet up” races for 2012.

The group, founded in Atlanta in 2009 to tackle obesity in African-American communities and to provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners, has chapters in more than 70 cities, including Columbus. The group was recently featured in Runner's World and Ebony magazines.

“We are honored that Black Girls RUN! has named the Capital City Half Marathon as an official race for 2012,” race director David Babner said. “We have gotten to know local ambassador Koritha Mitchell very well over the past year, and we look forward to welcoming other Black Girls Run! members from around the nation and showing them the best that Columbus has to offer.”

The Columbus chapter of Black Girls RUN! was founded in April 2011 and has more than 200 members.

“It's been a joy watching the movement grow here in Columbus, thanks to the support I've gotten from Janice Flowers, who is also a Black Gils Run! ambassador for our great city,” said Mitchell, a professor at The Ohio State University. “Janice and I never get tired of seeing a woman who hasn't been consistently active become excited about our standing appointment to walk and run together!”

The 9th Annual Capital City Half Marathon will draw an estimated field of 12,500 runners and walkers in 2012 when the downtown road race unveils new start and finish lines and other elements that will encourage participants to “Celebrate Like A Champion.” Cap City is the only race in the nation that features Yellow Tail Sparkling Wine and Chocolate at the finish line.

The Capital City Half Marathon will be held May 5, 2012 and feature four distinct races, including the namesake half marathon that has been held annually in downtown Columbus since 2004. This year's races will start at the new Scioto Mile and finish at the Columbus Commons, both new downtown parks.

“We will celebrate the Columbus Bicentennial in 2012 by featuring a new race course that will take our runners and walkers on the best tour of Columbus on two feet,” Babner said. “And then after the race we will celebrate as a group with Champagne & Chocolate at the best post-race party in the nation.”

The Capital City Half Marathon, founded in 2004 and produced by M3S Sports, has grown into one of the largest half marathons in the Midwest. Race weekend will generate an estimated $5 million in visitor spending as the Capital City Half Marathon and related events invigorate Columbus May 3-5, 2012.
