Press Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Capital City Half Marathon Presented by KeyBank today announced two changes to its championship course that could see as many as 12,500 participants crossing the finish line and “Celebrating Like a Champion” at Columbus Commons.

The 9th Annual Capital City Half Marathon, slated for Saturday, May 5, 2012, will highlight downtown Columbus' two new signature parks with its new Start line at Scioto Mile and new Finish line at Columbus Commons.

“The Capital City Half Marathon has always been about the celebration, and in 2012 we are going to celebrate our participants and the Columbus Bicentennial,” race director David Babner said. “We are proud to start at the Scioto Mile, finish at Columbus Commons and showcase all of Columbus throughout the 13.1-mile course before finishing with a party fitting of Columbus' 200th Birthday.”

Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman, the official race starter for the 2011 event said, “Capital City Half Marathon is truly a world class event in a world class city. It is just a natural step to now feature our world class parks for all of the nation to see.” Runners from all 50 states and 3 countries participated in the 2011 Capital City Half Marathon.

Columbus Commons is a dynamic 9-acre, multi-purpose green space that opened this year in the heart of downtown Columbus. “Columbus Commons is the ideal finishing spot for the Capital City Half Marathon,” said Guy V. Worley, President/CEO of Capital South, the organization that operates Columbus Commons. “With room for the thousands of runners, family and fans, we envision the park will be alive with activity and energy.”

After the race, the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party will lead the celebration with “Champagne and Chocolate,” a signature element of the Capital City Half Marathon, along with food, drink, music and much more.

More than 12,500 runners and walkers are anticipated to celebrate Columbus' Bicentennial with their participation on May 5, 2012 in the Capital City Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon, Commit To Be Fit 5K and the Capital Kids Mascot Chase.

The 9th Annual Capital City Half Marathon will include:

  • The 2nd annual Capital City Quarter Marathon, which will take runners and walkers along the 6.55-mile course through downtown Columbus and the Short North Arts District;
  • The Capital Kids Mascot Chase, an annual fun run for children and mascots of all ages with all proceeds benefiting the Capital Kids Afterschool program;
  • The popular Commit To Be Fit 5K (3 miles) which will cross over both the Broad Street and Main Street Bridges.

“The Capital City Half Marathon's four races provide runners and walkers of all ages and capabilities the opportunity to Celebrate Like A Champion,” Babner said. “The Capital City Quarter Marathon proved to be very popular this past year and will again provide participants a challenging middle distance that is quickly becoming one of our most popular distances.”

Also returning in 2012 is the Capital City Half Marathon Expo Party, a one-of-a-kind pre-race experience that this year included a VIP Lounge, the first-ever Panel of Champions and an appealing lineup of vendors that extends beyond the traditional shoe and apparel companies. Details of the 2012 Expo Party will be announced in the coming months.

The Capital City Half Marathon, founded in 2004 and produced by M3S Sports, has grown into one of the largest half marathons in the Midwest. The race weekend, May 3–5, 2012, will generate an estimated $4.2 million in visitor spending. Six charities are benefitted by the race including Capital Kids, Charity Newsies and the American Cancer Society.
