COLUMBUS, Ohio (December 5, 2016) — The 2017 USA Track & Field Half Marathon Championships will be held Saturday, April 29 in downtown Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods in conjunction with the 2017 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and again be telecast live on WBNS 10TV.
The 2017 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 10TV Commit To Be Fit 5K will also be held on Saturday, April 29, and feature 14,500 runners and walkers who will experience the “best tour of Columbus on two feet.”
Christo Landry of Charlotte, N.C., and Tara Welling of Portland, Ore., captured USATF Half Marathon national championships at the 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon.
The 2017 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and 2017 USATF Half Marathon Championships will air LIVE on WBNS 10TV for the second consecutive year. In 2016, the 2½–hour broadcast marked the first time a half marathon was broadcast live in Ohio.
“We are proud to bring the USATF Half Marathon Championships to Columbus again in 2017 and excited that WBNS 10TV will again televise the event LIVE,” said David Babner, race director of The Capital City Half Marathon. “The Half Marathon national championships were a tremendous success in 2016 and we look forward to again crowning champions in April while at the same time celebrating the 14,500 runners and walkers who will participate in the Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K.”
The men’s and women’s winners of the USATF Half Marathon Championships will receive $12,100 each, a National Championship Ring courtesy of the Diamond Cellar and a TAG Heuer Winners Watch, also courtesy of the Diamond Cellar. The men’s and women’s rings are each valued at more than $6,00 and the watches are valued at approximately $1,500 each.
“The National Championship Rings and TAG Heuer Winners Watches were tremendously popular with the national champions in 2016 and I can’t wait to present the rings and watches again in 2017,” Babner said. “Nobody has ever done this in road racing in the United States and we have now set the gold standard.”
Total prize and incentive money for the USATF Half Marathon Championships is more than $125,000.
On April 29, 2017, the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon will celebrate all 14,500 runners and walkers at the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party from 9am–1pm in the Columbus Commons. The party will feature the Coors Light Post-Race Concert.
All finishers will receive complimentary Yellow Tail Bubbles Sparkling Wine, the first Coors Light “On The House,” specials on Patrón Margaritas, a free slice of Papa John’s Pizza, complimentary Snowville Chocolate Mile and more. The Diamond Cellar VIP Experience Tent is also in the Columbus Commons.
Papa John’s of Central Ohio will again feature the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon on tens of thousands of pizza boxes in 25 restaurants as part of the company-wide effort to promote the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and benefit the OhioHealth Foundation.
Papa John’s will throw the “World’s Largest Pizza Party” at the finish line party by offering a free slice to all of the finishers in the Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and 10TV Commit To Be Fit 5K. Papa John’s donates an estimated 2,000 large pizzas for the giveaway.
Papa John’s of Central Ohio will also offer an online special offer for two large one-topping pizzas and a 2-liter of soda for $22, with $2 of each purchase donated to the OhioHealth Foundation. Visit www.papajohns.com and select SPECIALS to purchase. On Race Day, Papa John’s will sponsor the Papa John's Pace Teams for the first team. The Pace Teams will wear Papa John's running shirts and carry pace signs designed to look like pizza paddles.
USA Track & Field awarded the 2016 and 2017 Men’s & Women’s USATF Half Marathon Championships to Columbus in February 2015 after a joint bid by M3S Sports, which produces the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission.
“Columbus is thrilled to host USA Track & Field's Half Marathon Championships again in 2017,” said Linda Shetina Logan, executive director of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission. “We look forward to welcoming USA Track & Field back to our city in April for the Half Marathon National Championships and then again in December for the organization's Annual Meetings.”
The Capital City Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K will begin at the corner of Town and Front Streets and go through the Arena District, The Ohio State University campus, South Campus Gateway, Short North Arts District and German Village before finishing at High and Town streets. The Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and Post-Race Party are held in the Columbus Commons. The OhioHealth Health & Fitness Celebration & Packet Pick Up will at Columbus Common on April 27-28, 2017.
“The Capital City Half Marathon has always been a celebration of the healthy active lifestyle and we look forward to celebrating both the nation’s best long distance runners in 2017 and the 14,500 runners and walkers who participate in our event each year,” Babner said. “Nobody in the country celebrates its participants like we do — whether they be the nation’s best endurance runners, a middle-of-the-pack half marathoner or a walker.”
The half marathon is the fastest growing standard distance race among U.S. road racers, according to Running USA, an industry trade group. Nearly 2 million people finished half marathons in 2015, compared to 303,000 in 1990. The Capital City Half Marathon has grown from 3,000 participants in its first year in 2004 to an expected 14,500 in 2017.
DailyBurn.com, a popular Web site that provides workout and nutrition information to 2.5 million members, recently named the Capital City Half Marathon the “Best Half Marathon In Ohio.”
